About this deal

Decomposers — These organisms break down organic waste, turning it into soil that is then used by producers. In a food chain, each organism is at a different trophic level, which is determined by how many energy transfers separate it from the starting point of the chain. Moved into a science classroom this year and just getting up to speed? The expert science teachers on the Teach Starter team have put together the answers to some of teachers' most common questions! What Is the Difference Between Food Web and Food Chain?

The average efficiency of energy transfer between trophic levels is around 10%. Because of this inefficiency, food chains can only be so long. The length of the food chain is important because the amount of energy passed from one trophic level to the next decreases as the number of trophic levels goes up. Usually, only 10 percent of the total energy at one trophic level is passed to the next because the rest is used in the metabolic process. In most food chains, there are no more than five trophic levels.

This PowerPoint is great for active learning:

In a grassland ecosystem, sunlight is used by the grass to make its own food. Grasshoppers eat grass, while frogs eat grasshoppers. The chain continues with a snake eating a frog and an eagle eating a snake.

Species in a food chain are interdependent. This interdependence helps to maintain the population of any one species in the ecosystem. The first producers are at the bottom of the food chain. Autotrophs are the main producers, and they are usually photosynthetic organisms like plants, algae, and cyanobacteria. Both the food chain and food web demonstrate the flow of energy from one trophic level to another in a complex manner. This energy flow determines the various ecological processes and maintains the circulation of nutrients within the ecosystem. In a forest ecosystem, plants and trees are the ones that make things. A deer eats plants, while a carnivore like a tiger eats a deer.
