Firstly, there is very limited character development; the attitude of HPL to women is at best ambivalent; exposition is shaky, and HPL had a tin ear for dialogue. Monsters of all shapes and sizes, and degenerate inbred New England townsfolk who usually have nasty things in their barns, wells, attics, and woods.

There is something almost infantile about this, which raises the specter of a facile Freudian reading of the man's character. providing us with nail-biting scenes of exploration and horror, and tying it all together (albeit loosely) into his infamous Cthulhu mythos. Many of the papers were deposited in the library a few months after Lovecraft's death in 1937; others have been added by gift and purchase over the years. These extracts or paraphrases, however, have not been deemed significant enough to merit inclusion in this bibliography.The covers are so awesome and have this neat almost embossed effect between the matte “fabric” of the cover and the glossiness of the metallic lettering. I finished reading Jane Austen’s seven large novels not too long ago, and I was astounded by her writing ability. I have serval collections of Lovecraft's stories but I was looking for something easy to hold, read and carry with me on the bus, at the gym or just sitting back on a cloudy, misty day.

As far as Lovecraft's obvious (let's not kid ourselves) racism, it's my belief that it is possible to separate the art from the artist. at least that was before my grubby little mitts snatched the volume up and went home to learn some Sumerian so I could invoke the unspeakable incantations which would certainly bring this dream to a dizzying reality! Seemed pretty confused to me - kind of borrowed from lots of sources and then threw everything in one bowl of 'occult salad' with lots of H.

Don't get me wrong, taking a stand against an obvious racist is much easier when you don't like any of his stories, and I don't like any of these stories. THE DREAMS IN THE WITCH-HOUSE is my second favorite and the only one that actually gave me goosebumps while reading it for the first time in bed at night.All the familiar names are here: Cthulhu, Hastur, Shub-Niggurath, Nyarlathotep, Yog-Sothoth, Dagon, etc. Told once again in the first person, the story is about a student (whose name is never revealed) who goes to the ruined seaside town of Innsmouth, Mass. This collection of weird fiction short stories and novellas is slightly inconsistent in terms of quality, but it contains so many genuinely original and thoroughly harrowing, sinister tales that, on the whole, I found it a highly enjoyable—and often exquisitely eerie—reading experience.
