We’ve had the privilege of reviewing numerous special releases from Cragganmore in recent years. The humble and unassuming Speyside distillery was one of the original six in Diageo’s Classic Malts series, and has yet to receive low marks from us: a testament to both quality and consistency. So it stands to reason the flagship expression would bring equal to the table. Time to find out if this holds true.

With its natural tastes emerging through a nice smooth burn, it seemed just the right Scotch for being outdoors for days on a wilderness adventure. Special Delivery Requests? Let us know if we need instructions for where to find your house or want us to leave your wine in the shed! Being well aware of the colouring and chill-filtration, I must say that I really liked this whisky. Not at all complicated, just a very drinkable and enjoyable bottle. I took this over to a friends house sometime ago and the group of us almost finished the entire bottle! The distillery’s owner, Diageo, recognizes this too, having made the expression the Speyside whisky in its Classic Malts range. You are responsible for all activities through your account. Cragganmore range includes this 12 year old single malt and Distillers Edition. They’ve had special bottlings, such as the 14 year old for Friends of the Classic Malts. Cragganmore 12YO has been matured in second fill bourbon barrels and like mentioned, the whisky is slightly smoky. This malt is also a component for Johnnie Walker, Old Parr and White Horse blended whiskies. By The River (Spey) Palate Having flirted, plays hard-to-get. Interplay of teasing sweetness and stony dryness. Promises of orange blossom. Honey. Anise.

You’ve got to be joking. If it’s the best scotch you’ve ever tasted, I’d be afraid to taste your cooking. Finish: Sweet processed honey. Nice oak tannins, small bitter note. Trails off with hazelnut skins. Palate: More orchard fruit, some drying spice and a little honey initially, then water reveals a savoury hint of gamey meat is followed by a note of peppery oak and then a sweet layer of vanilla sugar. I’m sipping my first dram from this bottle as I type, and it is a lovely dram indeed. I get the hay in the nose with a heathery floral note. A bit on the thin side, but in a way that accentuates the delicacy of the flavors which are complex, subtle and well balanced. Not getting overwhelmed with sherry is a good thing here. Very smooth for its age. Light smoke comes through at the finish with a slight tangy, tart note.malted barley is provided by Diageo’s central maltings. Cragganmore uses traditional worm tubs as the cooling solution for their whisky. 5 out of 6 of Diageo’s Classic Malts distilleries use worm tubs for cooling: Cragganmore, Dalwhinnie, Glenkinchie, Oban and Talisker, only exception is Lagavulin.

So than, why the big difference in price, simple marketing and to a lesser degree demand. Either of which topics are outside the scope of this conversation. Cragganmore is part of the Classic Malts brand by Diageo. They use lightly peated malt but it doesn’t come from their own maltings anymore because No partnership, joint venture, agency, or employment relationship is created as a result of your use of the Service.

Nose: Lemon peel, Conference pear and rhubarb and custard sweets lead, with tanned leather, sandalwood and a hint of earthy peat in support. With water, there’s grilled pineapple, marmalade, soft toffee and a hint of green cardamom add depth. The Craggenmore 12 is as every bit as good as any 12 scotch 2 or 3 times it’s price, or for that matter any price.
