After all, the village was first built as a resort specifically to serve the shoreline and act as a gateway to the great expanse of gold that stretches as far as the eye can see.

Kingsley's biography, written by his widow in 1877, was entitled, Charles Kingsley, his Letters and Memories of his Life. The seaward part of the village lies within the North Devon Coast, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Kingsley was born in Holne, Devon, the elder son of the Reverend Charles Kingsley and his wife, Mary Lucas Kingsley. His brother Henry Kingsley (1830–1876) and sister Charlotte Chanter (1828–1882) also became writers. He was the father of the novelist Lucas Malet (Mary St. Leger Kingsley, 1852–1931) and the uncle of the traveller and scientist Mary Kingsley (1862–1900). If you’re after a bite to eat in Westward Ho!, try The Pig On the Hill, a stylish pub, a couple of miles up the road from the village. Devon steaks, fresh seafood, pizzas and a range of tasty pub classics are on the menu. There’s also an outstanding choice of local beers and ales, and a lovely terrace for when the sun’s shining. The town lends its name to the song "Westward Ho! - Massive Letdown" by the band Half Man Half Biscuit which recounts a dream about holidaying in the town. The song also mentions the nearby village of Northam. [10] See also [ edit ]

Although originally a political radical, Kingsley had by the 1850s become increasingly conservative and a strong supporter of overseas expansion. [4] The novel consistently emphasises the superiority of English values over those of the "decadent Spanish". [1] Although originally written for adults, its mixture of patriotism, sentiment and romance deemed it suitable for children, and it became a firm favourite of children's literature. [5] And the Earl of Portsmouth founded a hotel named ‘Westward Ho!’ Soon enough, other villas started to pop up nearby. And thus, the town of Westward Ho! was born. Beach With its gently sloped, sandy beach and mellow waves, Westward Ho! is one of Devon's best places to learn to surf, and recognised as a blue flag beach. Along the seafront, a number of surf schools and shops offer equipment to buy and hire. A good option is North Devon Surf School, one of the longest-running surf businesses in the region, and the only one in the village to offer hot showers and changing rooms. Book a lesson and you’ll be handed a wetsuit, board and all the expert advice you need to hit the waves. South West Coast Path Kingsley has been accused of intensely antagonistic views of the Irish, [13] whom he described in derogatory terms. [19] [20]

We’d never intended to visit Westward Ho! But sometimes it’s best to just follow the signs and follow wherever they might lead to. (And besides, did curiosity really kill the cat?) Driving through the North Devonian countryside following a visit tonearby Clovelly (which is supposedly the prettiest village in the UK), we couldn’t help but notice the signposts for a name with an actual exclamation mark in it. a b Donoghue, Denis (17 October 2013). [8] Notable resident [ edit ] I have read commentators claiming this text is a religious creation story, and also a parody of the novel Westward Ho. I hesitate over both of these ideas. The more credible idea is it is autobiographical, and also that is is a parody of/conversation with the three famous 'directional' plays of the Jacobean period - Westward Ho, Eastward Ho, and Northward Ho. Perhaps, it is not parody so much as completion of the compass.Mason, Nina (5 December 2016). "SureSet: 'If' by Rudyard Kipling for Westward Ho!". Pro Landscaper . Retrieved 13 October 2020. Rich businessmen in nearby Bideford saw the tourism potential almost immediately. Kingsley dedicated the novel to Sir James Brooke, Rajah of Sarawak, and Bishop George Selwyn, whom he saw as modern representatives of the heroic values of the privateers who were active during the Elizabethan era.
