About this deal

Most breast pumps work by triggering your let-down reflex so your body naturally releases milk. Once you've collected your expressed milk in a pouch, it can then be kept in the fridge for up to two days or the freezer for about six months. Help using a breast pump for the first time

And although I was fortunate to not have supply issues, I struggled with electric breast pumps. But with the Haakaa, I could easily get 2-3oz. from a nursing session, so I built up a large stash of breast milk in my freezer. I also love that it didn’t stimulate extra milk production like my electric pump would have.

Silicone pump: gently squeeze the pump to release air inside the pump and whilst still squeezing, attach it to your breast. When attached, release your grip on the pump, which will create a suction that starts to express the milk. For me, it seemed to work best when my daughter was nursing out of one breast and the Haakaa was suctioned to the other. After a couple of minutes – and with a little bit of squeezing the pump base – I was able to get a nice flow going. (I didn't try to pump too much because I don't actually need to build a stash for my 17-month-old.) Read the guide: Make sure the pump is attached correctly before you get started. 'Ensure attachments are fitted properly to ensure the pump works – many pumps come with different-sized attachments to fit it to your own breast for optimal performance and comfort,' says Bland. 'Many manufacturers have resources online which will have useful videos or step-by-step how-to guides.'

We have taken all of these elements into consideration when making our selections above. How to use a manual breast pump You can start using the Haakaa breast pump right away – it can help with stimulating your milk supply and get you started on a milk stash for your baby. This means its a piece of baby kit that can see you right through to the end of the first year, and beyond even if you continue to breastfeed after 12 months.Milk that's been cooled or defrosted in the fridge can be carried in an ice-cool bag for up to 24 hours. You should sterilize it before the first use and wash it after every use. You can do so by putting it in boiling water for 3-5 minutes. Unless your doctor recommends otherwise, you may continue to sterilize the Haakaa on an as-needed basis after you first sterilize it. 4. Is the Haakaa dishwasher-safe? With a Haakaa pump, all of the milk that would have gone to waste gets collected for you to use later. Once this stage is over your milk may then drip out a little steadier. So the secret is to keep the Haakaa on your breast for at least 15 to 20 minutes to ensure you’re getting a full feed. Does having a Haakaa mean I don’t need an electric pump? Engorged breast relief: Sore and engorged breasts can be a common problem for many new mums. 'Breast pumping will help express excess milk and help reduce associated discomfort,' says Eilis.
