About this deal

Originally, we had been pining after a deep green velvet to fit with our botanical theme. But in the end, we decided that a statement sofa like that would probably work better in a smaller size, and we really wanted as large a sofa as possible to give us growing room and space to sprawl. DFS has teamed up with a range of Exclusive Brands to create beautiful inspiring designer sofas for everyone, available exclusively at DFS, including Joules, French Connection, Country Living, House Beautiful and Grand Designs. Fabric sofasseemed like the safest choice for a young family. Choosing between fabrics was the toughest choice of this whole project! If you pop into yourlocal DFS store, they have a whole book of fabric swatches to choose from – which means you can really make a French ConnectionDFS sofayour own. Choosing your new sofa is no easy feat - it's a real investment that's going to be with you for many years. To really get to the crux of what you need to consider when looking for your new sofa, we caught up with the team at DFS.

We certainly wouldn’t buy another one, and I’m kind of looking forward to being rid of it. But alas, we will have to wait until our children are old enough that we dare buy a new sofa without it getting trashed. Next time comfort will be prioritised over style. The French Connection Zinc sofa bed is available in a choice of three materials and fourteen colours - from summery blush pink to sophisticated forest green - offering options to suit any décor, whether you have a thing for pale pastels, vibrant brights, or understated neutrals. Remember to consider doors, windows and radiators too, as well as the overall size of the room. Be aware of the depth of the sofa if you’re buying for a small room – the length may be smaller but the depth of the seat rarely changes from a large to small sofa. I’m not going to be one of those people, and call it Hygge just because I put a blanket over my knees, ( I ranted about this), but I will say that I do like a cosy winter’s evening at home on the sofa. The DFS Zinc sofa fits beautifully into our living room and is just the right size for me to sit on with my feet up. Everyone else has to sit on the floor and lean against the wall obviously if I do that, but for during the day when I am ‘working from home’, or quiet evenings when Belle is practising make up looks in her bedroom, it’s perfect for a casual spot of reclining. Colour and style are so subjective so get to understand what you like. Do you like colour harmony where similar tones live side by side peacefully? Do you like it when colours clash and surprise you?

I’ve got a new sofa from DFS – the Zinc 2 seater sofa, designed by French Connection. You see how comfy yet stylish I look? Squishiness aside, I really like the sofa’s fabric. It comes in lots of different colours and a couple of fabric types, but the one I’ve chosen has a lovely tweedy feel to it. It looks and feels much more expensive than it is, which is always a good thing if you’re on a budget.

Top tips

How important is trying before buying? Why is it important to go into store and try sofas, rather than just buying online? We also have a constant problem with the cushions sliding forward every time we use it. It is very frustrating and makes the sofa look really scruffy, unless you tidy it after each use. This has been an issue since the first year of owning it.

If you’re in rented accommodation and can’t decorate the walls or floors - plus you think you may move in a few years - it’s worth considering a neutral colour as it’s more transferable to a new interior. This may be a compromise but you can always create colour interest with accessories. However, we liked the light and uncluttered feel that living with smaller sofas brought. We were wary about upsetting the balance of ourliving roomwith a sizeablenew sofathat could potentially take over the room and become the first, and biggest, thing you notice about the space. DFS French Connection Zinc We haven’t been particularly precious about the upkeep of our DFSzinc sofa, but it still looks in as good condition as it does when we first got it. We are very pleased with the longevity the DFS French Connection sofa has given us so far. I think me and picture shelves are going to get on well – I love that I can change up the look any time I want without creating more holes in the walls, and that I can also use it to display plants and trinkets.

I find that the permanence of hanging prints on the wall actually scares me away from doing it, and as a result many of our walls are rather bare. This was my first time creating any sort of wall feature, and I had a lot of fun planning it. Although the French ConnectionDFS sofais a large sofa, it gives off a very slim appearance. The arms are slender, it’s not a hefty sofa, thezinc sofafeels light and balanced. Theclean linesand slender legs of the DFS French ConnectionZinc sofareally help to emphasise the space and flow in the room. Being able to see the floor underneath makes a huge different to how open the room feels. Our french connection fabric covers have always survived a machine wash on a low setting and scrub up pretty well afterwards. I cannot vouch for the velvet covers, though, as we don’t have experience of those.

DFS advise that you don’t machine wash the french connection zinc covers. However, with four children, there have been times when we’ve had to put ourzinc sofacovers in the washing machine. And times when we’ve had to give them a very good hand wash in the bath. DFS has more than 120 stores across the UK, Ireland, the Netherlands and Spain and employs over 4,000 people. Aside from their exclusive range of French Connection sofas, they've made choosing and buying your new sofa a breeze. My snuggling has been severely impaired until now by the fact that our biggest sofa was also the least cosy sofa in the whole world. It had no arms, no squishiness – what on earth is the point of a sofa with no arms? You may as well just sit on the floor and lean against the wall. That’s not very cosy is it? That’s like being 13 and on a school camp in an old mansion house and hanging out on the floor in the corridor because you think you’re cool. The botanical prints are all from Desenio. The concrete plant pot is from Geo Fleur, and the air plant is from MONTI. The copper pineapple is from Oliver Bonas, we usually store lighters for candles and other small bits and bobs in there.

Zinc Sofa bed

Catharine Denham, Head of Home at French Connection, said: “From its early conception, this new take on the classic old-style sofa bed felt streets ahead. Not only more compact, but elegant and easy to place, whatever your style.” Some people look at the colours they wear, as these are colours that you naturally gravitate towards so the chances are you love them – and if you love them, you can live with them. The Zinc sofa bed’s versatile, minimalist feel means that it can be easily styled to suit any living room or season. For an on-trend summer look, go for the blush velvet colour option and layer with global-inspired pattern in cushions and throws, then pair with plenty of greenery and hints of wood and rattan.” I sketched out a couple of options on paper first. I wanted something that would frame the sofa and balance that side of the room so that our large sofa wasn’t the one and only focus. Being a family of 6, we have definitely put the DFS French ConnectionZinc sofathrough it’s paces (and a house move!). But ourzinc sofahas held up incredibly well – it has kept it’s shape, and the legs are still solid.
