About this deal

Shooting an extremely light arrow over the longest distance possible is also a good indicator to measure the performance of a bow. How much energy stored in the limbs is actually transferred to the projectile?

Several hundred of these target stones existed at one point, but most have now been removed, stolen, or destroyed due to changes in the urban landscape, and there are now just a handful scattered around modern Istanbul. One surviving example from 1789, now standing in front of the city’s Military Museum, bears a poem composed by Sultan Selim III which translates:

below the lowest recommended bracing height, and shoot three arrows. Listen to the bow. Measure the bracing height. McEwen E, Bergman R, Miller C. Early bow design and construction. Scientific American 1991 vol. 264 pp76-82. And it is a brutally honest discipline: When you loose an arrow at roughly 45° angle into the air, it will immediately and remorselessly betray a sloppy release, unmatched spine, unbalanced shaft, or any other shortcomings. Herrin, Al. Cherokee Bows and Arrows: How to Make and Shoot Primitive Bows and Arrows. 1989. Abstract: The author reveals in step-by-step detail the Cherokee secrets for making bows and arrows from materials found in nature and for shooting them by ancient Cherokee methods

Record holders also had stone monuments on the archery range erected in their honour, with a poetic inscription detailing the archery’s name, the distance shot, and the date. a b "Royal Armouries: 6. Armour-piercing arrowheads". Archived from the original on 2016-03-24 . Retrieved 2008-09-28.

Natural feathers are usually prepared by splitting and sanding the quill before gluing. Further, the feather may be trimmed to shape, die-cut or burned by a hot electrically heated wire. It is crucial that all the feathers of an arrow have the same drag, so manual trimming is rarely used by modern fletchers. The burning-wire method is popular because different shapes are possible by bending the wire, and the fletching can be symmetrically trimmed after gluing by rotating the arrow on a fixture. It also saw a further attempt on the absolute flight record. The all-time record with a conventional hand bow was set by Don Brown of the USA at Smith Creek in 1987, at 1,222 metres. But the absolute flight archery record was set with a footbow by bowyer and archer Harry Drake, perhaps the most legendary name in the sport. In 1971, on a dry desert lake bed in California, he shot an arrow over a mile: 1854 metres and 40cm, a record that has stood ever since.

Bow investigates the extraordinary world of flight archery, the art of shooting an arrow as far as possible. Shooting for distance, or flight shooting, is not only one of the oldest forms of archery. It is also the most simple one –all you need is your bow, an arrow, and a bit of space. From the Greek meaning 'star-arranging', the study of celestial objects, originally as a means of timekeeping and navigation Of course animals have been targets right from the beginning, and sadly, humans too. But for probably just as long, people have practiced one form of archery that doesn’t need any target at all.
