About this deal

The Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN Contemporary Lens is compatible with all Sony E-mount cameras, including APS-C sensor format models, and it is also available in the Leica L mount. The rear portion of the hood is rubberized to, along with the mold-ribbed ring, facilitate installation and removal. And, though the sunshine was harsch and the contrast very high, the out of camera JPEGs are very pleasing, sharp at pixel level, with nice colours and contrast. You can get the Sigma cap on and off with the lens hood in place, but unless you have long, strong fingernails, it is easier to remove the hood first.

At the other end of the scale, here’s what happens when the Sigma is set to 18mm f22 for that sunstar effect.Axial CA remains somewhat persistent when stopping down, with the color misalignment effect increasing with defocusing. If you can afford it and dont mind the extra weight, DA 18-135 WR is built like DA 16-85, very nice lens, with a very convenient range, better than DA 18-55 from 18 to 55, comparable to DA 17-70 (which is a very good lens but as big and heavy as DA 16-85) when stopped down f7-f11, and good enough IQ at the long end for most real life scenes; see my last post on this topic: In regards to the Sony E-mount version of this lens, Sigma develops, manufactures, and sells lenses based on the specifications of E-mount, disclosed by Sony Corporation under license agreement. When used on a camera that utilizes a lens's entire image circle, a lens can be expected to create peripheral shading at the widest aperture settings. Taking the testing outdoors, we next look at a series of center-of-the-frame 100% resolution crop examples.

This is the type of lens you can take when you are unsure which focal lengths you will need, and it will usually be found to be the right choice. Most modern lenses have correction profiles available (including in-camera), and distortion can easily be removed using these. It is no accident that the Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN Contemporary Lens provides the most used general-purpose zoom range. The Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN Contemporary produces quite nice sunstars when stopped-down to f/22, as shown below, although it it a little prone to flare when shooting directly into the sun.

This sounds a good argument but there are lenses which are cheap and good. If the 21mm ltd was as good on the edges as the Canon 22mm ef-m I'd buy one (and the 22mm is half the price). My plastic 20-50 NX is way better than my 18-55 Pentax. My 30mm NX is a quarter of the cost of the 31mm ltd and on DXO is one of the sharpest APSc lenses out there. And why do we forget that even many very high grade primes need to be stopped down to be sharp from corner to corner.

Distortion ranges from mild barrel at 18mm to near distortion free at 35mm to slight pincushion distortion at 50mm. In the real world, lens defects do not exist in isolation, with spherical aberration and spherochromatism generally found, at least to some degree, along with axial CA.

Latest Reviews

The 1in sensor market has proven so popular it’s no surprise to find Nikon joining-in, but with its existing CX-format the company has something unique to bring to the party: a sensor with embedded phase-detect AF points. Coupled with its fast data readout and image processing, the new DL series inherits the ultra-fast burst shooting and confident continuous AF of the Nikon 1 series, but in what’s arguably a more attractive form factor. The "DG" refers to full-frame camera compatibility, and the "DN" indicates that this lens was designed for short flange mirrorless cameras. Not impressed with the Nikon 18-55 VR II retractable or Sony 16-50 either. So far the best compact kit lenses are the ones for MFT. The 24-200DXVR is stronger on the long end, sharper in the center, and can be used on an FX when/if you upgrade/rent.
