This edition features original illustrations by Miyazaki himself, accompanying a story by veteran children’s author Tsugiko Kubo. The benevolent Totoro helps the girls as they adjust to living apart from extended family and navigate being single-parented by their well-intentioned, workaholic father. The first word that comes to mind when describing the books is magical; yes, as magical as the film.This book is extremely cute as a physical item, and is scattered with beautiful watercolour illustrations that are reminiscent of the animation. As I read, I could picture the moments from the movie clearly and the added descriptions helped to bring it more to life. The finished film was described by Studio Ghibli producer Toshio Suzuki; "It was nature painted with translucent colors". There were some differences with the movie, but this book offered more info about the characters, which I really liked.

I started watching Studio Ghibli movies a few years ago, and they really hold a special place in my heart. If you have kids or like kids then this would be a good story to read them, but as I say pretty much the film. Tatsuo had to go to university (he's a professor) very early since it's farther than when they lived in Tokyo.
