About this deal

A scarifier can either be manual or electric and helps to aerate the soil, cutting through like a high-powered rake, making it healthier, (almost) weed-free and longer-lasting. Your choice of power is electric for convenience, petrol for more power, or manual, in which you provide the muscle power, ok for small lawns but you wouldn’t want to scarify a large lawn manually. Lawn raking is an alternative method of removing the moss or thatch from the lawn and is a less invasive process compared to scarifying.

The aerating blades slit well, neatly cutting through the soil and getting most moss and thatch, however, the spring tine scarifying drum lifts moss and thatch, but catches a lot of living grass, no matter which of the 5 heights from -10mm to +5mm you choose. This means when you do a run and when you need to turn around to do the next run back, you can lift the deck using the handle as shown in the second picture below whilst you manoeuvre and then lower it again. You can use a rake or a garden vacuum to do this and place any debris in a wheelbarrow to dispose of later, or directly in the green bin! A petrol scarifier works as well as the electric version but is more mobile and best suited to very large gardens. It comes with a 28L collection box and a 10m cable, which makes it best suited to a small to medium sized garden. Powered with a 1800W motor, it’s a little noisy at 104dB, but removes moss, thatch and other organic lawn debris very efficiently. You can use the same method for manual scarification as you do in the spring, just make as many passes as necessary. A build-up of moss and lawn thatch in the grass is often the cause of this spongy feeling, which not only makes turf look patchy, but prevents water, nutrients and air from reaching the grass's root system. The two scarifiers pictured below on my own lawn are what I think are two of the best scarifiers currently available depending on what you’re looking for in a scarifier.

The rainwater will rinse the sand bit by bit into the aeration holes created and thereby ensure permanently open channels for water and air.The AL-KO Combi-Care 38 E Electric Scarifier is a premium quality 3-in-1 machine that clears moss and thatch from your lawn. The AL-KO 38P has a working width of 37cm, that’s wider than the usual 30cm you usually find on domestic models. The Cobra scarifying drum has a series of sharp tines that rotate at high speed and cut into the turf in a vertical manner. This very wide range of depths lets you have full control over how aggressively you scarify your lawn at different times within the growing season. If you plan to overseed your lawn or add fertiliser after scarifying, it’s definitely a good opportunity to aerate your lawn.
