Creeping Beauty: Fairy Tales Gone Bad

I would describe Creeping Beauty as a cross between Sleeping Beauty, Alice in Wonderland and Wizard of Oz, with a definite splash of female empowerment and autonomy. The worldbuilding was all over the place, the side characters barely existed and nothing important happened. Prior to reading this fairy tale retelling, I had read several rather negative reviews, commenting on the style of prose and PoV of the story.

To put it succinctly, everything in this book from the writing to the characterisation to the plotting leaves much to be desired.The story had a vibe similar to Caraval, as you were never quite sure what was real, who you could trust, or what was happening. The problem here is that a poorly constructed world with nonexistent threats, gave no real weight to her supposed change, leaving her as she started -- as deep as a puddle. Overall, this was a nice idea on paper, but not quite a story I connected with; however, I do think every reader should try it for themselves. As a storyteller, I have a fascination with traditional tales, legends and myths, and I am genuinely excited when new texts appear which present fresh (sometimes twisted) versions of these stories, drawing in new audiences and challenging established ones.
